Permaculture & Aquaponics

By bringing Permaculture Design principles and practices into Aquaponics, we are closing many loops, inefficiencies, and energy drains that exist in more conventional systems, as well as integrating the system appropriately into the larger landscapes and ecologies it is a part of, making it a much more holistic and sustainable enterprise. Closed-Loop Aquaponics focuses on designing aquaponics systems that that produce as much of the system’s needs (water, energy, fish, feed, heat, gas, etc.) on-site and within the system itself as possible. Products of the systems can include; solar electricity, solar heated air, solar heated water, fish, prawns, vegetables, fruit, aquatic plants, algae, minnows, snails, worms, dry and liquid fertilizers, methane gas, and more. By using the Permaculture Design process, we learn to design systems appropriate to diverse climates and unique ecological niches to meet various needs, dreams, and desires.

Course Description

Aquaponics is one of the most sustainable and productive farming systems in the world. It combines Aquaculture and Hydroponics to create a truly self-sufficient closed loop system that uses only a fraction of the water, labor, energy, etc. that other methods use. Combining Permaculture Design with Aquaponics creates a truly closed loop system that is even more sustainable, dynamic, productive & regenerative. In this introduction you will learn about some of the most cutting edge and pioneering aquaponics systems in the world and gain a solid foundation from which to begin your own Aquaponics System, Farm and/or thriving Green Business. This course is a great place to begin your education while gaining invaluable experience in Permaculture based Aquaponics!

Permaculture & Aquaponics

By fusing Permaculture and Aquaponics truly sustainable closed loop systems are created that provide all the needs for the system within the system itself. A Permaculture focus on aquaponics systems can produce virtually all of the system’s needs (water, energy, fish, feed, heat, gas, etc.) onsite. Additionally all wastes produced by these system become resources and opportunities used to support, maintain and improve them. Products of the systems include: harvested rainwater, solar electricity, solar heated air, solar heated water, fish, prawns, vegetables, fruit, compost, worms, insects, aquatic plants, algae, minnows, snails, dry and liquid fertilizers, even biogas!

Course Includes

This introduction to Aquaponics with Applied Permaculture includes: a detailed exploration into Aquaponics, its design, functions, adaptability, uses, variations and improvements. We will touch on many field formulas, calculations, estimates, guidelines, detailed construction plans, piping schematics, Permaculture design integration and so much more. This course is intended to give you an in depth introduction to truly integrated regenerative Aquaponics systems. In addition, all your questions relating to Aquaponics will be answered by Max Meyers of Nor Cal Aquaponics.

This valuable information is a combination of skills, knowledge and first hand experience gained from several professionals operating Aquaponic farms, projects and training centers.

Because of the way we design and build our systems for electrical economy and sustainability, they use from one-half to one-tenth of the electricity other systems do. This saves thousands of dollars per year (more, as the systems grow in size). Our newest generation systems run of solar electricity, solar water and air heating with methane gas being produced as a back up energy source. We'll show you how to do this.

We will show you how to build your own hatchery for under $2,500. Others have spent over $40,000 on their own hatcheries of similar size and styles, these and other experiences have helped us to discover how to build this simple and productive integrated hatchery system!

The Commercial Aquaponics Training materials include: our step-by-step construction manual with variations and site specific applications that make it easy for anyone to build a system; a set of detailed plans for two systems, including site plans and piping schematics; an "Aquaponics course manual" covering all aspects of Aquaponics, including day-to-day operation of the system, and an operations manual with checklist containing field tested maintenance, monitoring and trouble shooting of challenges you may encounter in your commercial Aquaponics system. There are complete designs, plans and materials lists included! This training will be custom tailored to meet the dreams and desires of you, our students and new additions to our Aquaponics and sustainable food production community…
